Chatham, Rochester & Around >>>Chatham and Rochester play important roles in the heritage of Britain. In Chatham we have the old naval dockyard which now incorporates Chatham maritime where you can discover the history of the yard from Nelson's time, the Dickens theme experience and, of course, the dockside factory outlet centre. The Royal Engineers exhibition is close by and Upnor castle, which was commissioned by Elizabeth 1 as the first of the many defensive forts which surround the towns is just across the river. In Rochester we have the cathedral which was founded in 604,the castle built by William the conqueror, the Guildhall museum and the quaint old high street which Dickens loved and often wrote about. Buckmore Park kart circuit is close by and the beautiful Leeds castle is only 12 miles south. Further south is Canterbury with its cathedral and south again to Dover with its castle, secret wartime tunnels, white cliffs and Roman antiquities. London Victoria is 40 minutes away by train from Chatham station for a day's trip to the capital and Bluewater shopping centre is 20 minutes away in your car. The towns host a number of festivals throughout the year including: the Chinese new year, the Medway festival of steam and transport, the Rochester sweeps festival, the Dickens festival, salute to the forties, the Dickensian Christmas and various open air concerts in Rochester castle grounds. There is also a lively pub music scene in the towns. |
